Hydrospeed on the Vjosa River — Ride the Rapids Up Close

Forget the raft. Strap into a hydrospeed board, hit the current, and experience Europe's last wild river the way the water sees it.

What Is Hydrospeed?

Hydrospeed — also called riverboarding — is the most intimate way to experience a wild river. You wear a wetsuit, fins, a helmet and a buoyancy vest, and you grip onto a streamlined floating board. From there, you let the river carry you. You feel every wave, every eddy, every drop. There is nothing between you and the water, and that is exactly the point.

Where classic Vjosa rafting gives you the safety and shared rhythm of a team in a boat, hydrospeed gives you something more raw — the sensation of swimming with the rapids while still being in full control. It's growing fast across Europe, but in Albania it remains one of the most uncrowded places to try it.

Why the Vjosa Is Perfect for Hydrospeed

Crystal-Clear Water

The Vjosa flows without dams or pollution. The water is so clear that even at depth you can see the riverbed — a rare experience on European rivers and what makes hydrospeed here visually unforgettable.

Mixed Difficulty Sections

From easy Class I floats near Permet to punchier Class III drops in the Kelcyre Gorge, the Vjosa offers sections that match every level of hydrospeed experience.

Wild Scenery

You're riding through Europe's first Wild River National Park. Eagles overhead, towering gorge walls, untouched forests — all from water level. No other river in Europe looks like this.

Who Can Try Hydrospeed?

Hydrospeed is more physically demanding than rafting, so we have a few requirements. You need to be a confident swimmer, at least 16 years old, and in reasonable physical condition. You do not need previous hydrospeed experience — our guides will train you on the bank before you ever enter the rapids. If you are unsure whether it is right for you, our classic Vjosa rafting trips are a great starting point. Many guests do a rafting day first and come back for hydrospeed on the next visit.

Combine with Other Adventures

Hydrospeed pairs beautifully with our other Vjosa experiences. Pick one of our rafting packages for a multi-day adventure, or join a group rafting tour with friends. If you prefer a more relaxed water activity, try our river tubing on the Vjosa for a gentler float through the same scenery.
