Rafting Near Tirana — The Best Day Trips From the Capital

The Short Answer

There is no whitewater inside Tirana, but the city is where almost every rafting trip in Albania begins. The most practical day trip from the capital is the Osumi Canyon near Berat — about 2 hours away. The wild Vjosa is further south and is better as an overnight trip. So if you are based in Tirana and want to be back the same evening, Osumi is the answer; if you have a night to spare, the Vjosa opens up too.

Option 1: Osumi Canyon — The Realistic Day Trip

If you only have one day and you are starting from Tirana, this is the one. The drive to Berat takes around two hours on a good road, and the rafting put-in is a short transfer beyond the town. You leave Tirana in the morning, spend the middle of the day winding through a dramatic limestone canyon with waterfalls dropping in overhead, and you are back in the capital by evening.

Option 2: The Vjosa — Worth an Overnight

The Vjosa, Europe's last wild river, runs through the south near Permet — roughly three and a half to four hours from Tirana. You can technically do it as a single very long day, but you would spend more time in the car than on the water, and that is a shame on a river this special.

Our honest advice is to treat the Vjosa as an overnight. Drive down, stay in Permet (small, friendly, great food and free hot springs), raft the next morning, and continue south to Gjirokastra or the coast afterward. These are realistic one-way times, not optimistic ones. Add about 30 minutes if you are starting from the airport rather than the city centre.

How to Plan It

If you are flying into Tirana for a short visit, build the rafting into your route south rather than treating it as a there-and-back. Plenty of our guests raft the Osumi on their way to the beaches, or do the Vjosa on the way to Gjirokastra. That way the drive earns its keep.
