Nearly a decade of running trips has taught us which questions come up most often. Here are the honest answers. If yours is not covered below, send us a WhatsApp — we will get back to you within the hour.
Ask Us on WhatsAppWe run trips on two rivers only — the Vjosa near Permet and the Osum through Osumi Canyon. Both are in southern Albania, and both are accessible as day trips from Berat and Tirana with pickup included. We deliberately specialise in these two rivers rather than spreading ourselves thin across the country, because they are the best rafting rivers Albania has to offer and because our guides have genuine local expertise on them. Visit our Vjosa page and Osumi Canyon page for details.
The season runs from roughly April through October, with each period offering a different experience. Spring (April to May) brings the highest water from snow melt, producing the most exciting rapids — this is peak season for adrenaline. Summer (June through August) has lower, warmer water that is perfect for families, swimming breaks, and photography. Early autumn (September and October) is quieter, the light is beautiful, and the forests along the Vjosa start turning colour. There is no bad month — just different moods of the same rivers.
Not at all. The vast majority of our guests have never held a paddle before, and that is exactly who our standard trips are designed for. Before you get on the water, your guide walks you through everything — how to sit, how to hold the paddle, what commands to respond to, what to do if you fall out. It takes about fifteen minutes to learn, and by the first rapid you feel completely at ease. Swimming ability at a basic level is the only real prerequisite.
Time on the water is usually between two and four hours depending on which river you choose and the water level on the day. Counting the full experience — meet-up, drive to the put-in, safety briefing, rafting, change, and drive back — the standard trip from the riverbank is around five to six hours. Full-day trips from Tirana run longer because of the additional driving time, typically leaving early morning and returning by evening.
Yes, and many of our guests do. The Vjosa and Osumi Canyon are both in regions with great hiking, hot springs, caves, and traditional villages. We can help you plan a rafting day as part of a longer itinerary that includes a walking tour of Berat's UNESCO old town, a visit to the Benja hot springs near Permet, or a canyoning session on a nearby tributary. Just tell us what you have in mind and we will point you in the right direction.
Rafting is an adventure sport and carries some inherent risk, but with a professional operator it is genuinely safe. Our standard sections on the Vjosa and Osum are Class II-III, which are challenging enough to be exciting but forgiving enough that mistakes do not have serious consequences. Every guide on our team holds current swift-water rescue certifications, every raft carries rescue equipment, and we carry comprehensive third-party liability insurance. We also cancel trips when conditions are not right — better to refund than to push it.
Every guest gets a properly fitted helmet and a Type V rescue life jacket. In cooler months or on higher-water days we also provide wetsuits. Each raft carries a throw bag with rescue rope, a first aid kit, and spare paddles. Our guides carry communication devices and have trained emergency response procedures. We fit all equipment personally before you get in the boat — nobody launches with a loose helmet or a wrong-size life jacket.
It happens occasionally and it is almost always fine. Your life jacket keeps you floating on your back, your helmet protects your head, and we teach the safe swimming position in the pre-trip briefing — feet downstream, face up, toes out of the water. Your guide will pull you back into the raft within seconds, or throw you a rescue rope if you are further away. Falling out is not a dangerous event on our standard sections — sometimes it is the funniest moment of the trip.
Yes. Every guide holds swift-water rescue certification and wilderness first aid qualifications. We run mandatory pre-season refresher training every spring where the whole team goes through rescue drills, first aid scenarios, and any new protocols. Senior guides on our team have also worked as rescue instructors and have real-world experience responding to incidents on rivers across the Balkans and the Alps. You are in genuinely capable hands.
We cancel or reroute trips whenever conditions fall outside our safety parameters — heavy rain raising water to unsafe levels, lightning risk, unusually cold temperatures, or issues with our equipment. When we cancel, you get a full refund or the option to reschedule. In nine years we have cancelled dozens of trips and never regretted a single one of those decisions. Mild summer rain, on the other hand, is not a problem — you are going to get wet anyway.
The simplest way is to send us a WhatsApp message with your preferred dates, group size, and where you will be staying. We reply within the hour and the whole booking can usually be confirmed in a single conversation. You can also use the contact form on our website or email us at info@raftingalbania.al. No booking platform, no account required.
Our standard price is forty euros per person. This is a flat rate that covers your certified guide, all equipment (helmet, life jacket, wetsuit if needed, paddle, raft, waterproof dry bag), action photos shared via WhatsApp, snacks at the take-out, and full third-party liability insurance. There are no hidden fees. Transport from Tirana is priced separately because of fuel costs — see our Tirana day trip page for those details.
For standard bookings we do not require advance payment — you pay in cash (euros or lek) or by card on the day, at the meeting point. For groups of eight or more, and for private tours, we ask for a small deposit to confirm the booking. The deposit is refundable up to forty-eight hours before the trip. We will always be clear about what is required when we confirm your booking.
Often yes. We have taken plenty of guests who messaged us the night before or even the morning of the trip. During peak summer weekends we do book out, but midweek and shoulder-season availability is usually good. The fastest way to check is WhatsApp — message us with your date and we will reply straight away with availability.
Yes. Groups of six or more receive a fifteen percent discount off the standard price. For groups of twelve or more we can put together a custom quote that often works out significantly cheaper per person. Corporate and school groups have their own dedicated packages. See our group tours page for details or contact us directly for a tailored quote.
On the water you will wear a swimsuit (for women: one-piece or secure bikini; for men: board shorts or swim trunks) underneath the equipment we provide. On cooler days or higher water, we provide a wetsuit on top. Bring quick-drying athletic clothes if you prefer to cover up more. Avoid cotton underwear because it holds water — synthetic sports underwear is much more comfortable. We have a full guide on our what to wear blog post.
Sturdy footwear that can get soaked. Old trainers, water shoes, or river sandals with a proper back strap (not flip-flops — they will come off in the first rapid and float away forever). Your feet need to be secure in the raft. If you do not have suitable shoes, we have loaner pairs in common sizes — just let us know in advance.
Yes, always. Even on overcast days, water reflection intensifies the sun significantly and it is easy to get sunburned on a rafting trip. Apply a waterproof sunscreen before you launch — SPF 30 minimum, SPF 50 if you burn easily. Reapplying is tricky once you are wet, so go heavier than you think you need. A cap with a chin strap can also be useful, though you will be wearing a helmet on the water.
You can, but only at your own risk. We provide a waterproof dry bag that can carry a phone safely — ideal for photos at lunch stops or on calmer stretches. For action shots on the water, a head-mounted GoPro is ideal. We do not recommend expensive cameras unless you are confident in your waterproofing. Our guide takes photos and video throughout the trip and shares them with you via WhatsApp afterwards, so you will have good photos regardless.
Valuables and jewellery should stay at your accommodation — rings, earrings, necklaces can all get caught and lost. Leave your wallet behind other than enough cash for the trip. Sunglasses need a strap if you insist on wearing them (most people find they come off anyway). Anything you would be upset to lose in the river should not be with you on the raft.
On our standard Class II-III sections, the minimum age is seven years old, provided the child is confident in water and weighs enough to fit properly in a life jacket. Children under twelve always need to be with a participating adult. For lower-water summer trips on gentler sections, we can occasionally take younger children — discuss with us when booking. For high-water spring trips on the Vjosa, we recommend thirteen or older.
No upper age limit. We have had guests in their seventies have a great day on the water, and plenty of guests in their sixties are regulars with us. What matters is general fitness and comfort in water, not age. If you can comfortably walk a couple of kilometres and swim a short distance, you are fine for our standard trips. If you have specific mobility or health concerns, message us in advance and we will give you an honest assessment.
Average fitness is plenty. Rafting is not like competitive rowing — you paddle in short bursts when the guide calls for it, and most of the time you are floating and enjoying the scenery. If you can handle a normal-paced hike for a couple of hours, you can handle a rafting trip comfortably. Stronger, fitter guests obviously have an easier time, but we have happily guided plenty of guests who consider themselves out of shape.
Yes, basic swimming ability is required. You do not need to be a strong swimmer, but you should be comfortable in water, able to float on your back, and capable of swimming short distances if needed. Your life jacket does most of the work in keeping you afloat, but you still need to be calm in the water. If you are genuinely non-swimming, rafting is probably not the right activity — we can suggest safer alternatives.
Pregnancy, serious heart conditions, recent surgery, severe back or neck issues, and uncontrolled epilepsy are the usual contraindications. If you are on medications that affect your reaction time or balance, discuss it with us and your doctor. If you are unsure whether your condition is compatible with rafting, message us honestly and we will give you a straight answer — we would rather turn someone away than put them on the water if it is not safe for them.
Cancellations made at least forty-eight hours before your scheduled trip receive a full refund, no questions asked. Cancellations within forty-eight hours are evaluated case by case — we almost always refund for genuine reasons (illness, flight delays, family emergencies) and will happily reschedule for any reason if we have availability. We are not trying to trap anyone with a fee — we just want to avoid people booking and ghosting because it wastes guide time and a spot someone else wanted.
If we cancel due to unsafe river or weather conditions, equipment issues, or any other reason on our end, you get a full refund or the option to reschedule for another date during your stay. We will always try to reschedule first because we would rather you get the experience. If that is not possible because you are leaving Albania, the refund is immediate and unconditional.
Yes, and we strongly prefer it. If you need to change your date, just message us as soon as you know — we can almost always move your booking to another day with availability. There is no fee for rescheduling. This is flexible right up to the day of the trip if something comes up.
If one person in a group booking drops out, the rest of the group can still go ahead as normal. We refund the missing person in full if you let us know at least twenty-four hours ahead. For larger groups where the group discount applies, dropping below the discount threshold may adjust the per-person price — we will be transparent about any changes.
If your question is not covered above, just ask. WhatsApp is the fastest way and we usually reply within the hour. There are no silly questions — we would rather answer ten questions honestly before you book than have you arrive at the river unsure about anything.
