Most travellers who visit Albania spend their time on the coast. That is understandable — the Riviera is genuinely beautiful. But the people who venture inland tend to leave with a completely different story to tell.
Book Your AdventureRivers are the heart of outdoor Albania, and they are spectacular. The Vjosa — Europe's last large wild river, untouched by dams — flows through a valley that feels like it belongs in a different century. The Osumi has carved itself into a 26-kilometre canyon with walls rising eighty metres above the water. These are not manufactured attractions. They are wild, ancient, and completely real — and our rafting tours bring you straight into them.
We run guided rafting tours on both rivers, and €40 per person gets you a full day on the water with all equipment included, professional guidance, transport, and photos of your trip. The Vjosa suits all skill levels — family floats through the national park or more technical runs through the gorge sections depending on your group. The Osumi Canyon is a full-day expedition, classified Class II-III, and genuinely one of the most visually impressive things you can do in the whole Balkans. Have a look at our Vjosa rafting page or the Osumi Canyon tour for details.
If white water is not your thing but you still love rivers, we offer river tubing on gentler sections — perfect for a relaxed afternoon in the water without the paddling. It is the kind of activity that sounds lazy but ends up being one of those days you talk about for years.
The Albanian Alps in the north are among the most dramatic mountain landscapes in Europe. The Valbona Valley and the ridge walk to Theth — a route that has become something of a hiker's rite of passage — takes you through terrain that genuinely feels remote and untouched. Eagles circle above the ridgeline. The villages are stone-built and centuries old. The hospitality in the local guesthouses is extraordinary. If you have seven to ten days in Albania and want a proper mountain trekking experience, the northern circuit is hard to match anywhere on the continent for the price.
In the south, the hills around Permet and the Vjosa valley offer excellent day hiking with views of the river valley and nearby peaks. The landscape is drier and more Mediterranean, with wildflowers in spring and golden light in autumn. These are less technical walks but beautiful, and they pair perfectly with a rafting day.
Canyoning is one of Albania's best-kept secrets. The country has several spectacular limestone canyons that are perfect for the sport — abseiling down waterfalls, swimming through narrow gorges, jumping from natural ledges into deep pools. The Osumi Canyon region has a number of side canyons that we occasionally run as add-ons to rafting days, and there are specialist operators in the area who focus entirely on canyoning routes.
If you have done the classic outdoor sports and want something that genuinely makes you feel like an explorer, canyoning in southern Albania will do it. The scenery is wild, the routes are still being properly documented, and you will almost certainly not see another tourist group. Have a look at our canyoning Albania page for more information on what we offer.
Llogara Pass on the southern coast is one of Europe's most famous paragliding locations. The thermals off the cliffs above the Ionian Sea are consistent and powerful, and on a clear day you can see Corfu on the horizon. Paragliding schools operate here through the summer months and tandem flights are available for beginners. It is worth combining with a drive down the coastal road, which is one of the most scenic drives in the entire Mediterranean.
Cycling is another activity that is taking off in Albania, particularly in the flatter areas of the south around the Myzeqe plain and along the coast. Mountain biking in the hills around Berat is possible with the right equipment and guide. And for something truly different, horse trekking is available in parts of the Albanian Alps — a genuinely memorable way to see the mountains at a slower pace.
We specialise in river-based activities, but we know Albania's adventure scene well and we are always happy to help guests plan a broader itinerary. If you want to combine a day rafting with hiking, canyoning, or cultural visits, we can point you in the right direction for each. Most of our guests who spend more than two days with us end up doing more than just rafting — the country makes it easy to keep adding activities because everything is close together and affordable.
A typical two-day southern Albania adventure for us looks like this: day one, rafting the Vjosa near Permet with a swim in the Benja thermal pools in the afternoon. Day two, a full-day Osumi Canyon expedition with lunch by the river. That combination covers white water, canyon scenery, natural hot springs, and some of the most beautiful river landscapes in Europe — all within about a 50-kilometre radius of Permet. It is a remarkably concentrated region for outdoor experiences.

Albania has white water rafting, canyoning, river tubing, hiking, mountain trekking, paragliding, cycling, and horse trekking. The country is compact but diverse — you can switch between coastal, river, and mountain environments within a couple of hours. We focus on river activities (rafting on the Vjosa and Osumi), but we're happy to advise on everything else the country offers.
Very good, and still underrated. The landscapes are dramatic, the activities are well-priced, and the infrastructure has improved significantly in recent years. Licensed operators have been running professional tours for nearly a decade. You get proper equipment, certified guides, and genuine wild landscapes — at prices well below comparable destinations in Slovenia, Austria, or Croatia.
Absolutely — and we encourage it. Most guests who visit us for a day of rafting end up extending their stay once they see how much else there is to do. Permet and Berat are both ideal base towns for combining river adventures with hiking, cultural visits, and natural hot springs. We can recommend reliable local partners for activities we don't run ourselves.
For river activities, Permet is hard to beat — it sits on the Vjosa, has the Benja thermal baths nearby, and is a reasonable day-trip distance from the Osumi Canyon. Berat is another excellent base with the Osum River alongside and a UNESCO old town to explore in the evenings. For northern Albania's mountain activities, Shkoder or Valbona are the gateways.
Start with a rafting day on the Vjosa or Osumi — it's the best introduction to what Albania's rivers and canyons have to offer. Message us on WhatsApp and we'll put together the perfect itinerary for your group.
