Why Spring is the Best Season for Rafting

Every season on Albania's rivers has its own character, and we love them all for different reasons. But if you press our guides to name their favourite month — the month they would choose if they could only raft once a year — almost all of them say May, with April a close second. Spring is when the rivers are at their most alive, their most powerful, and their most visually dramatic. It is also when the landscape around the rivers is at its most beautiful: wildflowers filling the canyon margins, the mountains still snow-capped in the distance, the air clean and cool with the smell of new vegetation.

The reason spring is special comes down to simple hydrology. Albania's mountains — the Pindus range in the south and east, the Gramoz massif near the Greek border — hold enormous quantities of snow through the winter. As temperatures rise from March onwards, that snow melts and drains into the river systems. The Vjosa collects runoff from a vast watershed; the Osumi draws from the high limestone plateaux of the interior. Both rivers respond to snowmelt with surging water levels that transform their character. A river that looks broad and serene in August can look like a different entity entirely in April — muscular, fast, full of purpose.

For rafters, higher water levels mean better rapids. The wave trains are longer and more consistent, the drops have more punch, and the hydraulic features that make river reading interesting are all more active. There is a visceral satisfaction to paddling a river that is genuinely pushing back. It requires more coordination, more communication within the boat, and more focus from every paddler — and that engagement is precisely what most experienced rafters come looking for. If your previous rafting has been on calm rivers in stable conditions and you want to understand what the sport can actually feel like, spring in Albania is your answer.

Spring River Conditions

March is early spring on Albania's rivers, and it is a month of variability. Some years the snowmelt begins in earnest by mid-March and the rivers are running hard before Easter. Other years a cold snap in late February delays things and March feels like an extension of winter. We typically open our season around 20 March but we make that decision based on actual river conditions and weather forecasts rather than a fixed calendar. When we open in March, the water is cold — eight to eleven degrees Celsius — and we put everyone in full wetsuits. The rivers can be excellent in March, but it is a month for guests who do not mind the cold and want an uncrowded, raw experience.

April is where spring rafting really finds its stride. Water temperatures have climbed to the eleven to fourteen degree range — still cold enough to feel invigorating when you get wet, but manageable in a wetsuit. The flows are typically at their peak or close to it, the rapids are Class II to III and occasionally touching Class III-IV in the Osumi Canyon after a period of sustained snowmelt. The air temperature by mid-April is reaching the high teens on most days, the canyon walls are starting to show spring green, and the evenings after a rafting day are long enough to sit outside at a table in Berat or Permet and eat dinner in the warm dusk. April is, in short, superb.

May is the month our guides write home about. Water levels are still strong — typically eighty to ninety per cent of peak flow — but the edge of cold has gone from the water and the air temperature is warm enough to be comfortable between rapids without a wetsuit. Water temperatures reach fourteen to seventeen degrees, which most guests describe as refreshing rather than cold. The wildflowers are at maximum coverage: yellow broom, wild roses, poppies, orchids in the canyon margins. Eagles are hunting the thermals that develop over the limestone plateaux. The light in the late afternoon turns the Osumi walls from grey to amber to rose as the sun drops. May is a month that makes guests reach for their cameras every fifteen minutes and still feel they have not quite captured it. Book May well in advance — it fills up reliably every year.

Best Spring Rafting Routes in Albania

In spring we run both our primary routes — the Vjosa from Permet and the Osumi Canyon near Berat — and the choice between them depends on what kind of spring experience you are looking for. The two rivers are genuinely different in character and both are worth doing if you have the time.

The Vjosa in spring is a wide, powerful river running through an open valley. The rapids develop in natural drops where the riverbed changes gradient, and between them the current is strong enough to carry you along without much paddling effort. The scenery is open and grand — you can see for kilometres in each direction, the mountains visible above the valley walls, the occasional old stone bridge appearing around a bend. In spring the gravel banks have been scoured clean by high water and the river has a wild, constantly shifting feel. The Vjosa in spring is the river that reminds you why this was designated a National Park — it looks and behaves like something that has never been managed or interfered with, because it never has been.

The Osumi Canyon in spring is a more intense, enclosed experience. The canyon walls funnel the higher spring flows and the rapids inside the gorge are more powerful than at any other time of year. In the narrowest sections the canyon is barely wide enough for the raft with a metre of clearance on each side, and the walls rise dramatically above you. It is one of the most striking natural environments in the Balkans, and in spring the contrast between the dark stone, the white water, and the strip of blue sky above creates an atmosphere that several of our guests have described as genuinely awe-inspiring. The Osumi in spring requires respect — guests should follow guide instructions precisely and be comfortable with active participation — but the reward is proportional to the commitment.

What to Wear for Spring Rafting

Dressing correctly for spring rafting in Albania makes a significant difference to your comfort and therefore your enjoyment. The guiding principle is simple: you will get wet, you will be in water that is between ten and seventeen degrees depending on the month, and you will then be sitting in a raft in a canyon where the wind can cut through wet clothing very effectively. Layer accordingly.

We provide full wetsuits for all guests in March and April. These are five-millimetre neoprene suits that provide meaningful thermal protection at the water temperatures typical of those months. Underneath the wetsuit, a thin synthetic base layer — not cotton, which holds cold water against your skin — adds a useful extra layer of warmth. In May we typically offer the choice of a full wetsuit or a shorty wetsuit depending on the day's air temperature and how warm the water is running. On warm May days many guests are comfortable in a shorty with a UV rash vest on top.

Footwear is important. Secure shoes are mandatory on the river — water shoes, old trainers, or sandals with heel straps. The riverbank rocks and the raft's textured floor both require something on your feet. We provide helmets, buoyancy aids, and paddles. Gloves are occasionally useful in March for guests whose hands run cold, though most people warm up quickly once they start paddling. A waterproof bag or case for your phone is worth having even in spring when the rapids are relatively consistent — getting a good photo of the canyon walls from inside the raft is absolutely possible with a waterproofed phone, and many of our best guest photos come from spring trips.

Booking Tips for Spring Season

Spring is our most popular season among experienced rafters, returning guests, and visitors who have done their research and chosen their timing deliberately. That means availability is tighter in spring than in any other season, particularly for the last two weeks of May. If you have a specific date in mind, contact us as early as possible — we start taking bookings for the following spring season from January onwards, and peak dates can fill three to four weeks ahead.

Weekday trips in spring have better availability than weekends and tend to have smaller group sizes. If your schedule allows Tuesday to Thursday, you will often find more space and a more personalised experience. We run both group and private trips in spring; private bookings are particularly good for small groups of two to four people who want to move at their own pace through the river sections.

Weather in spring is generally good but not guaranteed. We monitor forecasts closely and will contact you in advance if conditions look problematic. Our cancellation policy is flexible — if we cancel due to unsafe conditions, we rebook you at no cost. If you need to cancel, let us know as early as possible so we can offer your slot to another guest. We are a small, honest operation and we treat guests the way we would want to be treated if we were booking a trip in an unfamiliar country. The price is €40 per person, all equipment included, no hidden charges. Message us on WhatsApp with your dates and we will give you an honest assessment of conditions and availability within the hour. See our full seasonal guide for a month-by-month breakdown, or check our clothing guide for detailed packing advice. Our Vjosa rafting page and Osumi Canyon page have full route details.
